Step-by-Step Guide: How to Add Scout’s AI Copilot to Slack

Step 1: Set Up Your Scout Account and Customize Your Copilot

  1. Create an Account: If you’re new to Scout, sign up for free at Scout OS
  2. Design Your Workflow: Select a prebuilt template or build a custom assistant.
  3. Configure your chatbot’s personality, knowledge base, and response style. For tips, check out our Scout Copilot documentation.

Step 2: Connect Slack to Scout

  1. Navigate to the Integrations page and under the Slack option click connect.
    • You’ll be prompted to grant permission to Scout; click Allow. If you are not an administrator of the Slack workspace, you may need to work with an admin for this step
  2. Add Scout to your desired Slack channel. Navigate to the Slack channel you want to integrate the AI Slack bot and @ mention @Scout to add Scout to that channel.
  3. Build Your Knowledge Base in Scout
    • To ensure Scout's AI Copilot provides accurate and context-relevant responses, you'll need to populate it with pertinent information.
      • Create a Collection: In the Scout dashboard, navigate to the Collections section.
        • Add Documents: Upload or create documents that contain the information you want the AI to reference. This can include product manuals, FAQs, internal guidelines, or any relevant content.
        • Upload Options:
          • Scrape a Website: Enter a website URL or sitemap to scrape pages. This method is ideal for capturing dynamic content across multiple web pages efficiently. For a full guide on scraping visit Scraping a Website.
          • Create Documents Directly in Scout: Create and edit a blank document directly in the Scout dashboard for hands-on customization. Tips on creating docs can be found here.
          • Use API or SDKs: Scout offers a robust API and provides both TypeScript and Python SDKs for advanced integrations. API Docs.

    • Organize Your Content: After uploading, organize your documents within Collections to ensure the AI can access and retrieve information efficiently.

4. Deploy the Scout Slack Workflow Template: Navigate to the Workflows page in the Scout dashboard and click Browse Templates.

5. Click the Slack category on the left, click the AI Slack Bot (Advanced) template, then click the Use Template button on the bottom right.

6. Configuring the Slack Workflow Template: Be sure to change out the company name in the Company Name Variable block.

7. Next, you will need to tell Scout which channel it should be listening to in your Slack workspace. You can find your channel ID by selecting the channel name within Slack. Scroll to the bottom channel detail panel to find and copy the channel ID.

8. With your Channel ID in hand, navigate back to the Scout workflow editor, and click the first Slack Message block. Paste your channel ID and press enter.

9. Next, you will need to tell the workflow to use the knowledge base collection you setup in step 3. There are two collection blocks in the workflow to update.

  • Click the Collection input, and select your collection for each of them. Once configured, Scout can now perform vector similarity search on your collection to quickly retrieve context-relevant data.

10. Save your workflow and test it out! You can test your Scout AI Slack Bot by posting messages in the Slack channel that you’ve configured to ensure proper functionality.
